Born London, England 1934; came to Canada 1968, taught English, Creative Writing and Comparative Literature at Carleton University, Ottawa, from 1968 to 1999, now Adjunct Professor. He lived for approximately two years in the Netherlands and three in Germany, and has travelled widely elsewhere in Europe, North America and Asia, especially India. Since retiring he has taught for a semester each at the State University of St Petersburg, Russia (late 2002) and at the Kohinoor Business School (on behalf of Carleton's School of Business) in Khandala, India from November 2004 to February 2005.Co-founded Arc magazine and was main Editor 1978-1988; co-founded and was Series editor of the Harbinger Poetry Series imprint of Carleton University Press, 1994-1999; founded and organized the Arc Reading Series in downtown Ottawa 1981 to 1991; was Reviews Editor of Literary Review of Canada, 1997, and of English Studies in Canada, 1998-2002.
