David Koulack was born in New York City. He earned his B.A. in psychology from Brandeis University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Yeshiva University. He taught at Brooklyn College and Washington State University before starting the first sleep and dream laboratory at University of Manitoba. He took early retirement in 1999 to satisfy his desire to write. His columns have appeared in The London Sunday Times, The Guardian, The Guardian Weekly and The Toronto Globe and Mail, among others. His fiction and nonfiction work has been published in Matrix, Geist, Canadian Jewish Outlook, The Dalhousie Review The Antigonish Review and Existere.
