The Writers’ Union of Canada (TWUC) joins with authors around the world in shock and outrage at the attempted murder of author Salman Rushdie. TWUC is following Mr. Rushdie’s recovery closely, and we are heartened by the recent news of his progress despite devastating injuries. A violent attack on one author is an attack on us all. Freedom of expression and the freedom to read are core elements of TWUC’s mission. Threats, intimidation, and violence are unacceptable responses to published words. We wish Mr. Rushdie and his family safety and security as he continues his recovery.
